Tennis star Maria Sharapova dominates in fashion too
While some people may be discussing Maria Sharapova's performance in the Australian Open, others are talking about how the 24-year-old is taking on the fashion world.Sharapova has designed shoes and handbags for Cole Haan and has an eight year, $70 million deal with sportswear company Nike to collaborate on designs.
Bloomberg.com reports that the $148 ballet flat shoe she designed for Cole Haan is one of the company's best-sellers.
"Since I was young, the artistic expression that fashion embodies has inspired me," Sharapova recently told ESPN. "It's a way to communicate oneself."
For Nike, she's designed a line of tennis dresses and other clothing items that are popular among her fans and fellow players. The 2012 dress is called The Statement Slam and features neon accent colors.
"I always like to start with a fresh color palette at the beginning of the year and keep the materials as light as possible because of the heat," she told ESPN.com.
She added that the line shows her attention to detail.
"Details are what makes clothing special. Sometimes not all details are visible from a distance, but when you're wearing the piece and you know how certain shapes and stitching were created, it makes it that much more special."
Those who want to dress like their favorite athlete or celebrity should know they don't have to pay full price. Shopping at stores that sell gently used brand name clothing can help fashion-conscious shoppers make their budgets go further.
