Oscar nominations begin fashion race for designers
The 2012 Oscar nominations have been announced, and fashionistas everywhere are anxiously awaiting the big night so they can see what their favorite celebs are wearing.Industry experts say that even before the nominations are announced, designers get to work on custom-made gowns for the actresses that could be in the running.
"All [of the best actress] nominees have been working with their personal stylists throughout the season and have probably already received gown offers up the ying yang and/or lined up a tailor-made couture gown," according to the HollywoodReporter.com. "Jewelry and shoes are always last minute items, and it's far easier to get a million dollar necklace loaner than it is to get a couture dress made. And faster."
The best actress nominees are Glenn Close, Viola Davis, Rooney Mara, Meryl Streep and Michelle Williams. The nominees for best supporting actress are Berenice Bejo, Jessica Chastain, Melissa McCarthy, Janet McTeer and Octavia Spencer. According to the New York Times, fashion insiders say that the fact that most of these actresses don't tend to gravitate towards one designer time and time again will make this year's award show red carpet interesting.
"None of them have obvious advertising contracts with the big fashion houses, either, so that means there will be a lot of jockeying to dress them," the newspaper reported.
If the recent Golden Globes are any indication, neutral colors, "mermaid-style" gowns and jeweled headbands may be popular choices at the Academy Awards as well.
Those looking to mimic their favorite celebrity's red carpet looks for less may consider shopping at stores that specialize in gently used clothing, accessories and shoes.
