Layering: Not just for spending time outdoors
Layering is much more than a way to keep warm during the cold winter months. Celebrities and fashionistas everywhere are layering multiple pieces to create stylish looks for day and evening. But how can you ensure you're wearing items the right way?
According to HubPages.com, individuals should stick to no more than three layers of clothing on top to look great and avoid extra bulk. The thinnest, most form-fitting item should be worn closest to your body (such as a camisole or fitted t-shirt). A slightly heavier layer, like a cardigan, goes next, while the heaviest layer should be last.
Bottoms can be layered as well. For instance, a skirt or dress worn with leggings and boots is an ideal way to make the trend work for you.
Designer Vera Wang recently weighed in about the layering trend to USA Today Weekend.
"Mix it up," she told the newspaper. "Don't worry about different shades clashing. Layering lends a certain nonchalance. Each element looks better, richer and more interesting when it's put with something else, so clothes don't look so serious."
Wang recommends mixing textures and proportions to create a unique look as well as mixing fancy and casual items.
"Pair dressy pieces with sportier ones [like a shimmery skirt with a long-sleeved tee or a printed dress with leggings] for a sophisticated contradiction," she advised.
Wang also said that layering necklaces is a great way to make the trend work for you without being too adventurous.
While some may shy away from layering because of the cost involved with buying several layers of clothing to complete a look, shopping at stores that specialize in used clothing and accessories makes this trend attainable for everyone.
